Old News from Spud Wood
Orienteering
In 2019 to celebrate 20 years of Spud Wood we built a permanent orienteering course. As part of Lymm Festival we hosted an event to launch the course.
We ran another event in the Autumn of 2022 as part of a LEAF event with new routes.
Primary school kids have tree-mendous fun planting trees at Spud Wood
Twenty children from years 5 and 6 Oughtrington Primary School helped plant over 130 trees including hazel, crab apple, downy birch, hawthorn, holly, goat willow.
The trees were planted to increase the mix of species within Spud Wood which was planted with help from the local community 20 years ago. The woodland currently contains mostly oak, ash and silver birch, and by planting other species this should help to make the woodland more resilient in the future to changes such as climate change and tree diseases as well as improving it for wildlife.
Hedge laying
We are very proud that we’ve learnt a bit about hedge laying and managed to finish the section that is most visible to visitors, and we have the blisters to prove it. Take a look.
We have continued laying the hedges in Spud Wood.

2016, Friends of Spud Wood wins Woodland Trust Willow Award for best collaborative achievement.
Benches
We have been very lucky to be given new picnic tables and benches by some groups and members of the community in Lymm, Oughtrington and Heatley.
Our thanks go to Heatley WI, Jubilee WI, Jubilee Gardening Club, Mrs Gregory and Mrs Bruce. See map opposite to see where you can find all the benches.
On Sunday 16 November 2014 Lymm High School Ecology Club helped FoSW volunteers plant almost 100 new fruiting and flowering trees. The trees were planted to increase the foraging opportunities in the wood as include crab apples, bird and wild cherry as well as Rowan.

In October 2016 Rotary of Lymm and FoSW planted 5,000 purple crocuses near the car park at Spud Wood. The crocuses are to raise money for polio eradication.
